Flamenco! ...the Studio / Tempe [Updated 10/10/09]![]() Flamenco! ...the Studio Flamenco! ...the Studio is the only dance center in the Central Valley devoted exclusively to the Flamenco Arts. We are a 2,000 square foot studio with a huge floated dance floor and wall of mirrors conveniently located to the Central Valley. We provide instruction in authentic Flamenco dance and guitar, offer guitar services, and present cultural events and theatrical programs. We provide our students with a sound and traditionally-based vocabulary in Flamenco, enabling them to understand what they see and hear in Flamenco anywhere. Our students gain knowledge of techniques and structures in such a way that they can transcend the limits of choreographies and arrangements and create and participate in spontaneous Flamenco, all while having fun and exercise! Many of our students, even beginners, have opportunities to dance and perform with other artists, and even perform in company presentations, enabling them to experience the connection and communication of live Flamenco right from the beginning. Linda Machado, Flamenco dancer and Ricardo de Cristóbal, master Flamenco guitarist and Flamenco historian are the founders of Flamenco ...the Studio. Both Linda and Ricardo are professional, full-time working artists and bring years of professional experience and dedication to the art of Flamenco. Additionally, Linda Machado is a selected Roster Artist with the Arizona Commission on the Arts. For current teaching schedule and events, see: www.flamencothestudio.com 2440 W. Medtronic Way, Ste. His teaching style utilizes compositions and arrangements in a calculated method to go beyond choreographies, plans, and rehearsals to make Flamenco a spontaneous, living, breathing art. Accompaniment to baile and cante is taught alongside solo guitar, and guitar students are encouraged to accompany dance classes under Ricardos supervision, as well as sitting in with visiting bailaores y cantaores. Ricardo reads music, but prefers to learn, teach, and compose by ear and eye. Ricardo is a full-time professional Flamenco guitarist and instructor. He has been playing Flamenco guitar since 1965. His studies in flamenco guitar began in San Francisco by sitting at the juerga table in the bar at La Bodega, trying to copy any guitarist who came by. Nino Bernardo was often there, accompanying every singer, dancer, or guitarist who happened to drop in, then playing solo beautifully. Bernardo's flexibility, creativity, and "in the moment" style was inspirational. Several years later Ricardo met Cristóbal Dos Santos, a protégé of the renowned Diego del Gastor. Diego was the creator and central figure in the style of Moron de la Frontera, an improvisational way of creating continuing variations on evolving themes. Ricardo's experiences with Cristóbal shaped his approach to all music, especially Flamenco, in improvisational directions. Ricardo also composes original music in a fusion of Flamenco, classical and jazz styles. You will find Ricardo performing at a variety of venues throughout the greater Phoenix area, as well as for many private functions. Ricardo also performs with dancer Linda Machado in the flamenco dance company Un Corazón Flamenco and is co-founder of Flamenco! ...the Studio. With over 43 years of experience playing Flamenco guitar and immersion into Flamenco history and culture, Ricardo is Arizona's premier Flamenco historian. Guitar lessons are private by appointment. Emerson St. Denver, Co. René Heredia is a leading figure in the development of Flamenco. René and his flamenco guitar have been together for so many years of his lifetime that there seems to be no separation of the two. He formed a bond with the guitar as a child. His life, his character, his loves and aspirations have all developed through the instrument. René began his training with his father, a Gitano Puro (pure Gypsy). As a boy, René was taught the rudiments of Flamenco Guitar and Spanish Gypsy Dance. He brings a unique view of both sides of the art form to his audience. As a little boy, René remembers always having the house full of flamencos such as Carlos Montoya, Vicente Escuderos, Mario Escudero, José Greco's Dance Company, Carmen Amaya, Sabicas, La Chunga and her Company. They were all close friends of José Heredia and his family. Sabicas would help and teach René the secrets of flamenco at his mother's kitchen table. ![]() At thirteen he was performing with his sisters, Fátima, Sarita, Zoraida, Carmen and brother Enrique. "Los Heredia" were doing concerts, television shows and supper club performances. His international recognition came when he was seventeen and the incomparable Flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya (Spain's greatest dancer of this century) heard him play. She immediately took him to be her lead guitarist. He toured many years and concertized the major capitals of Europe and the United States with the famous Amaya Ballet. While he was in Spain, René was invited to perform with the singing and motion picture star Antoñita Moreno in "Los Reinos de España". He was then invited to perform in the Festival de Canta Grande with Fosforito, Jarrito, Juanito Varea, Chocolate and Gordito de Triana, some of Spain's most outstanding singers. As his reputation grew, the famous Spanish dancer Jose Greco invited him to be his lead guitarist for several seasons. René has played for such outstanding dancers as El Guito, Mario Maya, Los Pelaos, Manuela Vargas, Luisita Triana, María Rosa Lutys de Luz, María Benítez, Los Heredia and many more. While living in Paris, René's distinguished LP album Alborada Flamenca was awarded the Gran Prix de Disque of France. In the United States, René was invited to perform the world premiere of his symphony composition and Flamenco suite for Guitar and Orchestra "Alborada Gitana" (a Farruca) which he performed with the Denver Symphony and Denver Chamber Orchestra at Red Rocks Ampitheater. René has performed live concerts and TV shows with his Flamenco Fusion Group and his Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theater. He performed solo concerts at such prestigious venuses as New York;s Carnegie Recital Hall four years in a row where he received standing ovations. The Champs Elysee Theater in Paris, Westminister Theater in London, Teatro Barcelona, Teatro La Zarzuela and Teatro Maravilla in Madrid, Spain, and the Dorthy Chandler Pavillion and Greek Theater in Los Angeles. René has performed concerts with this Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theater in Kansas Cyty where he was awarded the "Keys to the City" (sister city of Seville, Spain). He was recognized as one of Colorado's best-known composers in a special tribute to Colorado artists at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. René was invited to be the lead guitarist and guest artist with Stewart Copeland, founder of the "Police" in his national tour of the U.S.A. in "The Rythmatist", René was invited by Colorado Performing Arts Center to be the musical director for the play "Romeo and Juliet" (set in early colonial California). René was awarded the prestigous Governor's Award of Colorado for excellence in Performance and Education. This October he was awarded "The Mayor's Award of Denver for excellence in the Arts". He has done command performances for such gignitaries as Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Armand Hammer, President Ford and Prince Bandar, Ambassador to the United States, and son of King Fahd of Saudia Arabia. This August he did a command performance for Queen Noor of Jordan, Widow of King Hussein. He also performed for President Jimmy Carter at the 50th anniversary of the Aspen Institute. René has appeared on numerous national radio and television shows, including The Ed Sullivan Show with Duke Ellington, The Steve Allen Show with Sabicas and The Art Linkleter Show with Donald O'Connor and Abbie Laine. The George Gobel and Eddie Fisher Show with Carmen Amaya, and the Ann Southern Show with Cesar Romero. René appeared in the Spanish Movie "Balcón de Luna" with Paquita Rico, Carmen Sevilla, and Lola Flores. His N.E.T. concert specials and opening acts for such outstanding artists as Bill Cosby, Hal Lindon and Peter Nero have put René in the forefront as one of the leading Flamenco guitarists in the United States today. "René Heredia is the most sensational young Flamenco guitarist in the United States." Sabicas "... brilliant ... phenomenal ... exciting virtuoso." Variety "The audience wouldn't let him quit." Los Angeles Times "René Heredia is a brilliant guitarist." Walter Terry, New York Saturday Review "René Heredia, "He played a Danza Mora that rivaled any I have ever heard." Danced in four short sections, the steps are charismatic and project a lively gracefulness. No partner required! Men / Women welcome. Some castanet technique will be covered in this class For more information or to contact the instructor please visit Flamenco-con-Magdalena.com Lotus Music & Dance 109 West 27th Street 8th Floor New York, NY 10001-6208 tel.212.627.1076 fax.212.675.7191 www.lotusmusicanddance.org Flamenco Latino / New York [Updated 10/02/11]![]() Flamenco Latino's Weekly Classes in dance and music-Fall 2011!
